PM Tries to Slip Past Shoebridge and Taylor with Inflation‑Fighting Cuts, but Senate Turns It Into a Brawl

PM Tries to Slip Past Shoebridge and Taylor with Inflation‑Fighting Cuts, but Senate Turns It Into a Brawl

The prime minister was spotted in the back of the kitchen, covertly sliding a stack of budget spreadsheets under a pile of dirty dishes – a move he claimed would "quietly" tame inflation.

In reality, the PM announced a series of spending cuts designed to bypass the veto powers of Senators Shoebridge and Taylor, insisting the plan would be a surgical strike against rising prices.

Labor, however, reportedly warned that such cuts would spark a "protracted brawl" that no one in Canberra wanted to host, especially not in the Senate’s echo‑chamber of endless debate.

Undeterred, the PM tried to fast‑track the cuts through a back‑door process, likening it to sneaking a kangaroo past a fence by folding its tail.

When the Senate convened, the plan was met with a barrage of objections that resembled a fireworks display – bright, loud, and ultimately destructive.

Shoebridge and Taylor, armed with their veto rights, turned the proposed cuts into a parliamentary demolition derby, sending the budget proposal crashing into the floorboards of the chamber.

Labor’s warning proved prophetic as the cuts were torpedoed, leaving the PM clutching his spreadsheets like a lost surfer without a board.

The episode has left inflation still breathing fire, while the PM now faces the daunting task of finding a new way to trim the nation’s waistline without tripping over Senate furniture.

In the meantime, political commentators are betting on whether the next budget will be delivered via carrier pigeon or a smoke signal – both of which might be less likely to be vetoed.

One thing is clear: when the government tries to cut corners, the Senate will always bring a ruler to measure the fallout.

if this one landed.
