Mao‑Meme Mayhem: Mbappé’s Apology Kicks Off Chinese Backlash

Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé has issued a public apology after a viral meme likening him to Mao Zedong ignited a backlash in China.

The online uproar saw Chinese sponsors pull back, costing the French star valuable promotional contracts.

The incident has been likened to receiving a red card before halftime – a reminder that even a football icon can be sent off for off‑field missteps.

Mbappé hopes his apology will help restore his standing with Chinese fans and partners, even if the match against public opinion is still in extra time.
