Virgin Media O2’s £22bn Debt: Job Cuts and Customer Loss
Virgin Media O2 has been trimming staff, losing customers and seeing its debt swell to around £22 billion amid an increasingly competitive telecom market.
In the past two years the company has lost roughly 182,000 broadband customers and 644,000 mobile customers, while job cuts have reduced its workforce by thousands of roles.
The mounting debt has become a headline of its own, dwarfing other financial metrics and prompting senior management to reassure investors that the business will navigate the challenges ahead.
Rivals such as EE and Vodafone continue to attract customers, leaving Virgin Media O2 to grapple with a shrinking subscriber base and a balance sheet that looks more like a cautionary tale than a success story.
While the company promises to stabilise the situation, the immediate priority appears to be keeping the lights on and maintaining service for the customers who remain.
