Banking Titans Tied Down: The Chancellery Calls Big Five to London for Pre‑Budget Pow‑wow

Banking Titans Tied Down: The Chancellery Calls Big Five to London for Pre‑Budget Pow‑wow

At 3 pm a silver‑coloured hedgehog waddled into the Bank of England’s briefing room, nudging a stack of quarterly earnings reports before the CFOs could even take a breath.

The chancellor has called the bosses of the country’s biggest banks to a pre‑budget pow‑wow at the Bank of England, offering a tea‑drinking, scarf‑wearing session in the hopes of easing nerves before the Treasury’s tax raid later this month. The only thing left to decide is whether the audit will be a polite chat or a full‑blown interrogation.

The conference room, draped in tartan and full of polished mahogany, was set up for a cocktail of spreadsheets and croissants. A lone barista, wearing a Union Jack apron, was ready to serve espresso that could power a dozen boardrooms.

Banking executives, who had traded their usual suits for tartan scarves, exchanged numbers and not a single spreadsheet. The meeting felt less like a strategy session and more like a family reunion where everyone insists on bringing their own wine.

When the chancellor opened the session, he reminded them that the tax raid was still on the calendar, and that the only real surprise would be whether the auditors had brought their own tea.

The Governor of the Bank of England, smiling through a pair of polished spectacles, declared the gathering a “necessary exercise in corporate diplomacy” and urged the banks to keep their hairpins in place for the upcoming audit. The room erupted in polite applause, and the hedgehog, having finished its mission, scurried out into the London fog.
