Drone‑detour diplomacy: Merz’s Kyiv bridge visit hit by Russian drones

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv for a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky that included a walk across a bridge over the Dnipro River.

While the delegation was on the bridge, Russian drones targeted the structure, delivering a shallow strike that injured two pedestrians nearby.

The incident turned what was meant to be a diplomatic photo‑op into an unplanned “drone fireworks” display, prompting the German team to comment on the “unique security situation” they faced.

Ukrainian authorities provided assistance to the injured, and the bridge remained standing. The episode highlighted the challenges of conducting high‑level diplomacy in a conflict zone.
