Cummins backs Smith’s South Africa return but doubts he’ll finish 19‑Test marathon

Pat Cummins has voiced strong optimism about Steve Smith’s return to South Africa, marking the veteran’s first Test matches on the sub‑continent since the infamous 2018 tour.

At the same time, Cummins conceded that the Australian board’s ambitious 19‑test schedule over the next ten months comes with no guarantee Smith will be around for the entire stretch.

The uncertainty reflects Smith’s age and injury history, turning what could be a spectacular comeback into a marathon rather than a sprint.

Cummins’ candid remarks highlight the pressure on both captain and deputy as Australia looks to improve its standing in the world rankings.
