NBC’s ‘Newlyweds’ Fires Showrunner Gail Lerner, Hires Veteran Bruce Helford

NBC announced that series co‑creator and showrunner Gail Lerner has been dismissed after creative differences, and veteran writer‑producer Bruce Helford has been hired to take over the reins of “Newlyweds.”

Helford, a longtime sitcom writer‑producer, is expected to guide the show toward a more traditional comedy formula, reflecting NBC’s preference for proven sitcom sensibilities.

The move highlights the network’s readiness to make swift leadership changes when a series’ creative direction strays from its brand, turning a behind‑the‑scenes shuffle into a plot twist worthy of the very sitcom it concerns.
