Paris Motor Show Becomes Chinese Parade, Western Makers Whisper to Their Engines

Paris Motor Show Becomes Chinese Parade, Western Makers Whisper to Their Engines

A life‑size replica of a dragon, cobbled together from recycled battery packs, hissed louder than the opening fanfare on Monday, signalling that the Paris Motor Show had taken a decidedly Eastern turn.

The usual French perfume of diesel and diesel‑scented nostalgia was quickly overrun by the sleek, neon‑lit rows of BYD, Xpeng and Zeekr, each gleaming like a promise that the future had already been outsourced.

Western carmakers, accustomed to polishing their chrome and polishing their press releases, were seen whispering to their engines in a desperate attempt to translate the buzz into something more familiar than "shēng chǎn".

With over 200 auto sector brands on display, the show floor resembled a bustling bazaar where the Chinese stalls attracted the longest queues, while the Western tents gathered only polite applause and a few lingering sighs.

Market share for the Chinese trio has surged in recent years, a fact that now feels less like a statistic and more like a gentle nudge from the exhibition hall’s very own crystal ball.

As the lights dimmed and the dragon’s battery lights flickered out, the takeaway was clear: if you can’t out‑design the competition, you might at least learn to order a croissant in Mandarin.

if this one landed.
