Ireland Proposes €141bn (8%) Trim to EU Budget, Sparing Farms and Cohesion

Ireland has put forward a proposal to shave €141 billion – an 8 % cut – from the EU’s seven‑year budget. The plan leaves the agriculture and cohesion pillars largely intact, reducing them by just 3 %.

In exchange, the Irish government adds a €55 billion‑a‑year own‑resources package, meaning member states would contribute a larger share of their own revenues to the EU fund.

EU leaders are scheduled to discuss the proposal on the 15th of next month, a date that will add another item to Brussels’ already packed agenda.

The proposal has drawn a mixture of bemusement and cautious interest in Brussels. While some see the modest 3 % cut to farm and cohesion spending as a diplomatic olive branch, others wonder how the €55 billion top‑up will be financed.

Ireland’s reputation for fiscal prudence is well‑known, and the government hopes the plan will demonstrate that a leaner budget can still keep the EU’s core projects afloat.
